Jenna Rae Cakes — Case Study
Client: Jenna Rae Cakes
Industry: Food & Beverage

The Challenge
Jenna Rae Cakes is an established Winnipeg designer bakery known for macarons, cupcakes, and bespoke celebration cakes — but their digital storefront did not reflect the editorial quality guests experience in-store. The brand needed a site that felt like a boutique magazine: warm serif typography, curated product storytelling, and a shopping journey as thoughtful as the pastries themselves.
Product complexity was high. The menu spans daily rotating macaron and cupcake flavors, a curated sweet catalog, pre-order designer cakes, and a fully interactive cake designer for custom tiers. Each flow needed distinct UX — browse-and-bag for everyday treats, guided configuration for bespoke cakes, and an AI matchmaker to help guests discover flavors without decision fatigue.
Mobile-first traffic from local Winnipeg customers made performance and clarity essential. Guests needed to see today's oven rotation at a glance, understand boutique pickup policies, and move from inspiration to basket in seconds — without the site feeling like a generic Shopify template.
The Solution
ZadionLabs designed and built an editorial e-commerce experience on Next.js that leads with "The Art of Modern Sweets" — a hero pairing serif headline copy with an arched product feature and dual CTAs for Shop Now and the interactive Cake Designer.
We structured the homepage into numbered editorial sections: Oven Rotation with a daily baked agenda and day-selector highlights, a Curated Sweet Catalog for macarons and cupcakes, and a Custom Designer entry point for bespoke pastel tiers. Navigation anchors — Sweet Shop, Custom Designer, AI Matchmaker, and Basket — keep discovery and checkout one tap away.
The AI Matchmaker helps guests find flavors based on preferences without overwhelming the catalog. The interactive cake designer walks users through tier selection and signature styling before pre-order. A persistent announcement bar promotes macaron pre-orders and boutique pickup, reinforcing local Winnipeg positioning established since 2014.
Performance optimization, semantic HTML, Open Graph metadata, and image optimization target strong Core Web Vitals on mobile. Delivery followed a four-week sprint: brand direction and wireframes in week one, component build and catalog architecture in week two, designer and matchmaker flows in week three, then SEO, QA, and production deployment on Vercel in week four.
